Breede River Rafting

This quaint, almost pre-historic village, lies on the bank of the Breede River en route to Swellendam from Infanta’s coastline. It is home to South Africa’s only river crossing, which today still serves as an imperative link between the two sides of the river. Here one can find one of South Africa's Two working "Ponts" - a river ferry for vehicles, livestock and other for transportation across the river.

Back in the day Malgas was a safe place for ships to hide away from the stormy coastline of the Cape and deliver goods to the Overberg region. One of the most significant ships that came into Malgas to deliver goods, a ship of 158 tons, was the ‘Kadie’. Not bad for a ship of such magnitude and in those harsh times.

Malgas is the perfect base from which to explore the Overberg and the nearby De Hoop Nature Reserve. The Breede River is known as the best fishing estuary in South Africa and supports an profusion of fish that include Cob, Spotted Grunter and Garrick. The rich marshland area near the river supports an abundant collection of wildlife such as the fish eagle, kingfisher, the oyster catcher and fish owl. Anglers, bird watchers and nature lovers in general will enjoy the breathtaking wildlife attraction Malgas has to offer.

Enveloped in a landscape of uninterrupted fynbos-swathed mountains, this place will creep deep into your heart.

If it’s the perfect weekend or holiday escape you’re after, make Malgas your first choice. Because apart from its superb scenic and wildlife attractions, Malgas also offers outstanding dining experiences and pre-eminent accommodation, among which the Malgas Hotel must be the most famous.

Built in 1996, the Malgas Hotel is a 51 room Classic Cape Dutch revived establishment, aimed at pleasing even the most discerning and distinguished guests from all four corners of the earth. Scrumptious meals and time-old hospitality never went out of fashion here.

Malgas will have your head turning in every direction with its many sights and to-do’s. And if you feel like venturing over the Infanta’s side, just hire a boat or pay the pont operator – it’s an incredible experience on its own to cross the 35 km river in its breadth whilst still sitting in your car!
